169. The phrase “Buddhist church” represents an Americanization of the practice of Buddhism among East-Asian groups. In the Japanese American community, this change of name came about shortly after World War II and the internment of over 120,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans, mostly on the West Coast. The effects of war galvanized this process of Americanization among Japanese American Buddhists.

For a description of the context, theology, and pedagogy of McCormick Seminary, see Esterline and Kalu, Shaping Beloved Community.
